Nestled away in the heart of Grant Wood country is a small body shop that caters to those who seek the finest restoration work on their vehicles. At first glance, it seems like any other country body shop—clean, unassuming but full of pride. It is a little cottage for weary vehicles needing to restore themselves from the vigor of age and use.

As you pull into the drive way you see a blue and white sign that seems to tell everyone what this place is all about, “Country Auto”. Most people would drive past it without much notice, but if you took the time to see how the sign was made, you would know that you could expect quality work from anyone who would make such a sign by hand. Open the doorway into Country Auto and you will see many paintings and miniature models hanging from the wall, all signs that tell of a master craftsman nearby.

Pride and Heritage

Alan Zumbach
and his wife Regina are the owners of this business. As Alan comes out of his shop to greet you, a black Labrador follows close to his side. As first impressions go, Alan is a soft-spoken man with a voice that seems to carry a lot of pride and patience. If you took the time to sit down with Alan, he’d tell that he’s a third generation farmer and still works the field with his dad and three brothers. Two of his brothers are bankers and his only sister married one. The joke in the family seems to be that Alan gets a lot of financial advice, but no one would loan him any money.

Country Quality

Alan has been in the body business for over 31 years. He has the hands of a Swiss watchmaker and the patience of a Japanese gardener. If you could see some of the paintings and minatures that Alan has created, you would see why his auto body work is so sought after.
